My contribution for a semester long project to create a social media campaign to bring about social and behavioral change. My group chose to tackle what we could with sex trafficking in Minnesota. Given the broad scope of the topic, we chose to focus on prevention efforts.
Through my research, I found that the girls who are most vulnerable lack a strong support network. With this information, we decided to target adults who are part of young girls’ lives and give them tools to protect them. Since this is a massive goal, I wanted to break it down into small, achievable actions. This way people would not give up on helping entirely due to overwhelm and helplessness.
I also wanted to communicate in a way that’s not fear mongering or overly distressing. Our audience already knows that sex trafficking is horrific, we don’t need to remind them. Instead, I wanted to calmly give them the tools to take the first steps toward protecting the girls in their life.
